American composer born in Barrio Viejo, Tucson, Arizona, author of hit songs in Spanish such as Never Jamás and Canción Mexicana, christened by former president Bill Clinton as the father of chicana music, songs in English and Spanish narrating Mexican stories and North Americans. With no formal music instruction, he learned to play the guitar with his mother and during trips to Mexico, which inspired many of his songs.
He has written over 700 songs and sold millions of records in English and Spanish in a variety of styles, including protest songs, cha-cha-cha and rock. One of its biggest successes in Spanish, Canción Mexicana, has been qualified as Mexico's unofficial national anthem. He has also made a series of albums for children such as the themes of Las Ardillitas, famous rodent trio in Mexico and among Hispanic community, as well as composing ballads in honor of Robert Kennedy and César Chávez, the peasants' union leader North Americans.
He even wrote parodies such as Tacos for Two with the rhythm of Cocktails for Two, as well as a satire on discrimination: Mama, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Busboys. He was 88 years old when he died at a medical center in Rancho Mirage, near Los Angeles. He finished his last work, recording three of his songs for a posthumously released Ry Cooder album. With his widow Lidia, he left two children, Mark and Dan, a stepson, José Guerrero, and a stepdaughter, Patricia Lowy.
