Carnival “cancelled” in most capitals
The new outbreak of Covid-19 cases, driven by the Ômicron variant, made the carnival, taken for granted by some, become unfeasible. This was the case in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), which transferred the traditional parade of samba schools to April, as well as in São Paulo (SP).
However, the mayor of the Carioca capital, Eduardo Paes, has already announced that he will maintain the optional point of the carnival, which will be between February and March. A similar decision happened in Manaus (AM), which even without the revelry decided to keep the optional point and give the week off.
In Bahia, a state that also has a carnival tradition, Carnival week will not have a holiday or optional point. In this case, the state governor, Rui Costa, said he intended to avoid possible crowds on trips.
Omicron variant containment
Even with vaccination, there is still a significant number of unvaccinated people who end up pulling the large number of contagions. Furthermore, the Omicron variant has a higher degree of contamination, although the number of deaths among those vaccinated is controlled.
However, considering that it is necessary to interrupt this great cycle of contamination, states are opting to cancel even holidays. This is the case of Alagoas and the city of Belo Horizonte (MG), which have already announced that there will be no holiday or optional point.
