How Acupuncture Can Decrease Symptoms of Tension Headaches

Tension-type headaches are categorized as chronic when they occur at least 15 days a month. These are the most common, which is one of the reasons why many resort to alternatives outside of traditional medicine, seeking to reduce discomfort.

Study indicates relationship between acupuncture and headache reduction

For those struggling with painful and disturbing headache episodes, study done at Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine found that acupuncture progressively reduces the number of headache days in the month. The main finding of the study was a reduction of at least 50% in the number of headache days. Each of the 218 participants had a clinic visit once every four weeks. They used a sort of “headache diary” to record their symptoms and use of strong medications.

At the end of the study, 68% of those who received genuine acupuncture reported at least a 50% reduction in number of daily headache episodes, compared to 50% of those who received acupuncture superficial.

In addition, after treatment, a gradual reduction in symptoms was also identified for those who continued intensive acupuncture. Thus, it was possible to observe a decrease of 20 days per month, compared to the beginning of the study. However, it is worth mentioning that there were side effects, but they were mild and did not need to be treated.
