Earth may cease to exist due to a “killer” planet

Indeed, the solar system is full of mysteries and there are still many that need to be studied and answered.

Scientists have already identified the existence of a large empty space between the planets Mars and Jupiter, where other planets can be formed.

Another unknown is the fact that there are no intermediate planets in the system. There are only rocky planets and gas giant planets. Earth is the largest of the rocky planets, while Neptune is the smallest of the gas giant planets.

After all, why is our solar system so full of mysteries?

Astrophysicist at the University of California Riverside (UCR), Stephen Kane, decided to test the hypothesis of the existence of an extra planet in the solar system.

The "killer" planet

The study carried out by Kane involved very complex dynamic simulations on his computer that were able to show the gravitational interactions between the different planets of the solar system.

The astrophysicist then decided to place planets between Mars and Jupiter, as they have an enormous distance, with varying masses, and therefore observed what would happen to the other planets.

Due to the planet Jupiter having a gigantic total mass, it has a very large gravitational influence on the solar system. If any celestial object disturbs it, all others will be deeply affected.

What would happen if there was a fictional Super-Earth?

Depending on the mass and location of this fictional Super-Earth, its presence could destabilize Mercury, Venus and Earth. In some cases it could even change the shape of our planet's orbit, making it uninhabitable for us humans.

By decreasing the planet's mass and positioning it between Mars and Jupiter, Kane realized that it would be possible to keep it stable for a long period of time. However, any slight movement in any direction could cause instability.

These results gave Kane a new respect for the complex order that keeps the planets in orbit around the sun. He concluded that our solar system is very well balanced and that everything works like a precise clock.

Kane claimed that if we added more elements to the solar system, he could break this balance completely.
