O "Father's Day” is a commemorative date celebrated all over the world. The intention is to honor all parents, caring, loving men, warriors, protectors and workers.

In Brazil, "Father's Day" is celebrated in the second sunday in august, being therefore a variable date.

Initially, the date was celebrated on August 16, the day of St. Joaquim, father of the Virgin Mary and grandfather of Jesus. In the country, the commemoration was held for the first time on August 16, 1953.

During this day, there are different types of celebrations, presentations, family lunches, exchange of gifts throughout the country.

There are reports that point to celebrations around the father figure in Antiquity. Legend has it that in Babylon, about 4,000 years ago, a young man named Elmesu carved out of clay a message to his father, wishing him good wishes and happiness.

More recently, in 1909, the date appeared in the United States, idealized by Sonora Louise Smart (1882-1978). Her idea was to pay tribute to her father, William Jackson Smart (1842-1919), a warrior and civil war veteran, who raised six children after his wife died in childbirth.

Father's Day (father'sday) was made official in the United States by President Richard Nixon (1913-1994) in 1972. However, it was celebrated for the first time in the country on June 19, 1910, the day in which Sonora Louise's father was born.

Currently, the date is celebrated on the third sunday in june in several countries around the world: England, Canada, France, Netherlands, Macau, Malaysia, South Africa, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, India, among others.

In several countries around the world, other dates were chosen for the commemoration:

  • March 19 - In Portugal, Angola, Bolivia and Italy.
  • First Sunday in September - In Australia and New Zealand.
  • February 23 - In Russia.
  • June 21 - In Greece and Norway.
  • Second Sunday in November - In Sweden, Finland and Estonia.
