The Costa Rican flag is one of the Most important official symbols of the Costa Rican Republic vis-à-vis other countries in the world.
The current official flag of the Republic of Costa Rica was adopted from November 27, 1906.
With a ratio of 3:5 (three meters high by five meters wide), the Costa Rican flag is divided into five horizontal stripes, in blue, white and red. From top to bottom, the first band is blue, followed by a white and a red one, this one being twice the size of the others. After the red band, another white band follows and, finally, a blue band.
There are two versions of the Costa Rican flag that are adopted by Costa Ricans: with the country's coat of arms, centered on the left side of the flag, and one without this shield, a version that is more popular among citizens of that flag. nation.
Costa Rica Flag History
The country's first official flag appeared in 1821, featuring two horizontal blue stripes (which represented the Pacific and Atlantic oceans) and a yellow band separating the blue ones (representing the idea of “goldenAmerica”, that is, a land of riches).
In 1823 the flag changed drastically and is now represented by a red six-pointed star (representing the country's provinces) against a white background.
From 1824 onwards, the Costa Rican flag varied between different models where horizontal bands and the use of blue and white colors predominated.
As stated, the contemporary version of the Costa Rican flag was only instituted from 1906 onwards. However, the adhesion of the coat of arms on the left-central corner of the flag (known as “National Shield of the Republic of Costa Rica”) was only made on April 21, 1964.
