THE critical review it's the abstract are quite common in the daily lives of those who study. Whether in elementary school, high school, universities or open courses, these textual genres make their presence known.

Because it is so common and has been with us for practically our entire life, it was expected that producing a review or a summary would not be a problem for most people. But, unfortunately, the impasses encountered when producing these texts are commonplace.

With this in mind, Brasil Escola has prepared a text to clarify all issues related to the definition and Description of these textual genres. Are you ready?

Summary

Abstracts gained prominence in the 19th century when the popularization and access to scientific information were made possible by journals that presented only abstracts. According to Meadows¹ (1999), magazines and newspapers contained texts with condensed versions of articles published in scientific journals.

From this, we can infer that summaries are texts that highlight the most relevant aspects of a given work.

Review

The review is a text that evaluates and presents the content of works already completed, that is, it is an analysis of a given production, be it a literary work, be it a film, a work of art, a scientific article etc.

Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;)

According to Fiorin and Savioli² (1999), reviewing is the same as surveying what is most important in given work, describe the relevant aspects that involve it, always according to the evaluation of the reviewer.

An interesting aspect to note is that, to make a review, we will always make use of aspects that make up the summary: selection and presentation of the most relevant ideas of a given work.

From what was presented, it is evident that there are similarities between these texts, but, when producing them, we have to be very sharp in relation to the peculiarities of each one.

The abstract is characterized by being selective, objective and free from comment/judgment of those who produce it. The critical review, however, necessarily presents the reviewer's analysis.
